It is hard to believe that Keirungi Children’s Village has been open for 7½ years this month. It seems like yesterday when Primrose’s dad took us to survey the property that he subsequently gave to Primrose and that is now home to Keirungi.
Keirungi Children’s Village officially opened November 10, 2010, when we took in our first child – Joseph Nowamaani. In 2011, we took in 10 more children. Of these children, four were later adopted by loving families in the U.S. (one child has Down syndrome), one was resettled with his father, and another child was resettled with her grandma.
In 2012, we took in eight more children. Of these children, two brothers were later resettled with their mom and a girl was resettled with her grandma. We had taken in the two brothers while their mother recovered from a severe illness. At the end of 2012, we had 18 children staying at Keirungi.
Then in 2013, we took in four more children. One boy stayed with us for two years and was then adopted by a loving family in the U.S. In early 2013, we resettled one of our girls with her grandma. At the end of 2013, we had 21 children staying at Keirungi and a total of 23 children had stayed at Keirungi our first three years.
We saw four children leave us in 2014. Two brothers were resettled with their mom and two boys were adopted. As four children left Keirungi, we took in three more children. By the end of 2014, a total of 26 children had stayed at Keirungi and 20 children were currently living there.
Four more children left Keirungi in 2015. One boy was resettled with his father, another boy was adopted, and a brother and sister were also adopted. As space opened up, we took in three more children. At the end of 2015, we had 19 children staying at Keirungi and a total of 29 children had stayed there our first five years.
The following year (2016) was largely uneventful as we had only one girl resettled with her grandma. Last year (2017), we took in one child whom we had been assisting in the community.
As of April 2018, a total of 30 children have stayed at Keirungi. Of the 11 children who left, five were resettled with family members and six were adopted. We currently have 19 children residing at Keirungi.
